Liberty Knows No Compromise Phone: 432-204-2451 Fax: 432-837-7183 ABOUT THE AREA AND OUR FACILITYThe AreaNext to the Alaskan wilderness and perhaps isolated areas of the Mojave Desert, the Chihuahuan Desert region of Texas (west of the Pecos river) is among the most remote and inhospitable areas in America. The landscape is extremely rough and broken—laced by mountains, canyons and arroyos subject to flash flooding. The surface of this shrub desert simmers under a 120-degree (sometimes even higher) sun in the summer. It can also get very cold, even with occasional unexpected snowstorms, during the winter. Hypothermia and/or dehydration are incessant concerns. Every non-human inhabitant of the rocky, ankle-twisting terrain has fangs, claws, stingers, or thorns. Rattlesnakes, scorpions, coyotes and mountain lions outnumber human inhabitants exponentially. The nearest medical facility is almost two hours away. So what is the moral to this story? There are several, actually:
Our FacilityOur ranges and training area are located behind two locked gates on approximately 320 acres about 5 miles south of the small town (population around 2,000) of Sanderson in Terrell County, Texas. We are actually located in what is locally known as Isinglass Canyon but often refer to our range as “Fire Base Hagler” since it can be found on the USGS 1:24,000 Hagler Canyon Quadrangle. The range is within a gated community. On the way in, you will pass through numerous private ranches and other properties on each side of the private road. No hunting or shooting of any kind is allowed anywhere along this road—be respectful of private property rights—the fundamental idea that built America. Despite the caveat above, the facilities are excellent for their intended purpose. The main range area includes a Headquarters building and a covered (as in shady in the summer and dry in the winter) firing line that accommodates basic rifle, pistol and shotgun courses of fire. The range is equipped with portable target systems that will accommodate steel as well as paper targets in 50 yard increments from 50 out to 400 yards and then in 100 yard increments all the way out to 1,000 yards. In addition, the training area is laced with numerous “fingers” and arroyos emanating from the canyon wall to the canyon floor, all of which make for excellent advanced training opportunities—especially for a shrub desert environment. Accommodations and LogisticsThere are four independently owned motels in the Town of Sanderson. To say that any of them have any sort of “star” rating would be a gross exaggeration. However, they are “adequate” for a shower and a good nights rest and the price is right. There are also a couple (sometimes three) of restaurants where the food is decent and the price is also right. “Primitive” (meaning no facilities) camping is permitted on the training area. Bring whatever you think you will need if you decide to go this route. If you need more information concerning accommodations, just let us know when you send in your application and we will try our best to answer your questions. As a general rule, food is not available at the range. Therefore, you will need to bring food for your anticipated needs. Faculty and InstructorsDr. Jimmy T. (Gunny) LaBaume, Chief Instructor and Range Master . The “Gunny” grew up in rural Texas where firearms were simply considered a given part of life. He cannot remember the first gun he owned but he can remember the first game he took. It was a fox squirrel with a Daisy “Red Rider” BB gun and the cooperation of a lifetime companion—an old mutt dog named “Smut.” Born a warrior, he began his martial arts career in 1956 (at the age of 12) in the Golden Gloves boxing ring. He began the study of Tae Kown Do in 1963 and was one of the first “round eyes” to earn the Black Belt in that Korean Art. He has since trained in Thai Kickboxing and currently continues his martial pursuits by training in Mixed Martial Arts. “Gunny” LaBaume's Marine Corps career spanned a total of 35 years. He is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War as well as Operation Desert Storm. He served several years as Operations Chief (and Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Training) for 4 th Reconnaissance Battalion and finished up his career as a Company 1 st Sgt in that Battalion. His “civilian” shooting experience encompasses more local, regional and national level competitions than he can count—including a world championship won by his team (Team Sand in the Wind) at the Soldier of Fortune, International 3-Gun Championships. In his “spare time” Dr. LaBaume is a Professor of Economics and Statistics in the School of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX. Most important of all, he is an entertaining speaker, highly competent and dedicated teacher—one of the rare ones who genuinely care about their students. Adjunct Faculty(To be added) |
